The haul from Massad’s house included at least 14 syringes and more than 45 vials — some empty or used, others filled with liquid medicines, records show. There were at least 15 bottles and containers of pills and unknown substances, at least two of which were prescribed to Massad, records show. Bjorn Brunvand, one of Massad's defense attorneys, told the Times. Brunvand said Massad has not practiced medicine without a license. Ten of the vials seized contained the anesthetics Septocaine or Lidocaine, according to the records. Among the allegations against Massad are that he injected an anesthetic on Aug. 24 into the ankle of a man who suffered a deep cut there.
Brunvand had no comment on whether the seized anesthetics were connected to the injection. Anesthetics figured in Massad’s move in 1992 to relinquish his medical license, too. A 3-year-old patient of his died from a Lidocaine overdose after Massad had a dentist inject her with it, the state Board of Medicine said. The dose turned out to be toxic and Massad failed to recognize it, the board said. The firearms seized included four handguns, two AR-15 rifles, five shotguns, a muzzleloader, a .22-caliber Winchester rifle and a .375 caliber Browning rifle. Massad is accused of firing two rounds from a .40-caliber H&K pistol toward the deputies as they entered his home.
