Did you try a different USB port on the computer or a different connecting adapter? To rule out the USB port as a problem try to plug any other USB device in that drive and see if the computer recognizes that. I wonder if the battery in the unit won't hold a charge anymore and that is why you play from the computers power but not the mp3 alone.
